Main event time already after a fantastic three fights with a PFL contract on the line! Headlining the Featherweight edition of the PFL Challenger Series is familiar face and undefeated prospect Brahyan Zurcher taking on David Evans. Zurcher won as an underdog on last year’s PFL Challenger Series and earned his appearance tonight with a second win in the SmartCage at Madison Square Garden during last year’s playoffs to improve to 4-0. Evans meanwhile boasts a 5-1 record which includes three first round finishes. One last fight before a contract is awarded, let’s see what the Featherweights have in store.
Round 1
The bell rings and our main event is underway as Zurcher takes the center of the SmartCage early and both fighters land briefly before Evans takes a low blow and we take a brief break in the action.
They restart and Zurcher throws a very heavy body kick catched by Evans who sweeps Zurcher off his feet briefly before they reset. These fighters must have watched the rest of the card in the locker room because they came to scrap tonight and both men are throwing and landing BOMBS!
Zurcher is doing an excellent job with body kicks, both teeps and roundhouses and they are drawing heavier and heavier reactions from Evans. Zurcher is likely looking to set up the high kick eventually but he’s also chewing up the lead leg of Evans as a solid welt is forming on Evan’s calf at this point.
It seems as the round has gone on Zurcher has only continued to pick up momentum, landing heavy strikes before eventually landing a takedown and starting to pepper short ground and pound shots with about 90 seconds to go in the round. Zurcher is staying busy on top with volume and briefly snatches the back of Evans locking in the body triangle as the round ends. Evans is going to need to make some adjustments on the stool.
Round 2
We begin the second round with more of the same as Zurcher attacks the lead leg and the body of Evans with kicks. Both fighters are turning up the volume in this round as Evans seems to be taking his corners advice and being more aggressive.
Evans loads up on and telegraphs an overhand right and Zurcher beautifully times up a double leg and takes the back in one fluid motion. Zurcher is attacking the rear naked choke now and he gets the tap to remain undefeated!
